Auschwitz

The Auschwitz complex was comprised of various concentration and extermination camps established by Nazi Germany in occupied Polish territories during World War II. It included Auschwitz I, Auschwitz II-Birkenau, Auschwitz III-Monowitz, and 45 other satellite camps. Located in Oświęcim, about 43 km west of Kraków, it was the largest extermination center of the Nazi regime. Approximately one million three hundred thousand people were sent there, of whom one million one hundred thousand died. The vast majority were Jewish (90%, or one million), but it also included Poles, Roma, prisoners of war, communists, regime dissidents, among others.
