Split
Split, a city on the Dalmatian coast of Croatia, is famous for its beaches and for the fortress-like complex at its center, the Diocletian's Palace, erected by the Roman emperor in the 4th century. The ruins spread throughout the city include over 200 buildings, which were once thousands. Inside the white stone walls and under its courtyards, there is a cathedral and a variety of shops, cafes, bars, hotels, and houses.
Diocletian's Palace
The Diocletian Palace is a monument located in the city of Split, Croatia. It was built between the 3rd and 4th centuries AD by the order of the Roman Emperor Diocletian with the intention of spending his last days after his abdication in May 305.
Golden Gate
The Golden Gate, or "Northern Gate", is one of the four main Roman gates in the old town of Split. Built as part of the Diocletian's Palace, it served as the main gate through which the Emperor entered the complex and was elaborately decorated to mark his status.
