Taquile Island

The island of Taquile, in Lake Titicaca, belongs to the district of Amantaní, Puno, Peru. The island is located 45 km from Puno, the regional capital. It has a population of about 2200 inhabitants. The main village is located at 3,950 m a.s.l. and the highest point of the island reaches 4,050 meters above sea level.

It is said to be the cradle of the Incas and contains various ruins. Its waters are known for being calm and giving off a brilliant reflection. In its surroundings, lies the Titicaca National Reserve, which is home to uncommon aquatic species, such as giant frogs.
