Meteora
Meteora is a rock formation in central Greece hosting one of the largest and most precipitously built complexes of Eastern Orthodox monasteries. The six monasteries are built on natural sandstone rock pillars, at the northwestern edge of the Plain of Thessaly near the Pineios river and Pindus Mountains. The name means 'lofty', 'elevated', and is etymologically related to the meteor.
Saint Nicholas Anapafsas Monastery
The Saint Nicholas Anapafsas Monastery is one of the monasteries in Meteora, founded in the early 16th century. The frescoes of this monastery, painted by the Cretan monk Theophanes Strelitzas, are among the best examples of post-Byzantine art in Greece. The monastery is situated on a narrow pinnacle and is known for its striking views.
Rousanou Monastery
Rousanou Monastery, also known as St. Barbara's Monastery, was founded in the middle of the 16th century. It is part of the Meteora monasteries and stands out due to its location on a steep and middle-high rock. Dedicated to St. Barbara, the monastery is a place of peace and reflection and offers panoramic views of the surrounding scenery.
